Ali Karim (MD) came to us following his immense around-the-world journey, in-which he carried out a series of interviews with national influencers, detailing the most compelling and significant experiences of their lives.
His long-form documentary film format for Netflix was working well, but needed the histories brought to life. The challenge was to authentically depict the process leading up to the Qing Dynasty’s brutal conflict with the Japanese Empire.
Working with a team of fine artists, we used a hand-drawn and watercolour technique to pay homage to the byzantine elegance of the fine art of the Qing Dynasty -notorious for its floral working patterns and the subtle subliminity of its characters – seeking to transport viewers to a time and place far from their normal conscious residence.
The result is a unique and powerful synergy of analogue and digital that vibrantly reincarnates the stories and people seminal in shaping the Japenese Empire as we see it today.
We continue to work with Ali on the rest of his series. The Documentaries are now in advanced talks with Netflix.
